Pottery for one and all

Julie had chosen this place precisely because it was so easy and fun to make conversation here. A little tea shop, where you could get sandwiches and get caffienated, and if you bought a meal you could do a little art project as well.

Art as in pottery -- this place had shelves and shelves of blank pottery, and all you had to do was point and they'd bring a bit and a row of paints over to you. Give it to them by dessert and it'd be fired and ready before you left.

They'd agreed to arrive seperately, so she was waiting in the foyer, plugged into her iPod, nodding cheerily along with the music. All in all, today would be terribly fun.

Jake entered through the front doors, feeling the nerves and excitement anyone would feel about meeting a new person. Julie's suggestion had interested him. It certainly was a unique concept.

Thank goodness for livejournal icons--he knew exactly who to look for. All he had to spot was curly red hair, which wasn't hard to find. Once he saw Julie, he ambled over with his relaxed ease, hands stuffed in pockets. "What are you listening to?"

She pulled out her earbuds and grinned. "Best of G'n'R. One of my favorite CDs." She paused it and tucked the iPod away. "I'm a big hair band nut. Oh, I'm Julie." She offered him a hand to shake. "Nice to finally meet you in person."

Jake accepted her hand and gave a friendly shake. "Nice to meet you too, Julie. Jake." He quirked a brow, "Hair bands, eh? GnR's alright in my book, but I prefer Skynyrd and the occasional Aerosmith and AC/DC."

Jake's eyes started exploring the space, almost awed by the myriad of blank pots all around. "Wow. You're gonna have to walk me through this; tell me how it's done. This certainly was a unique choice." He smiled.

"Aerosmith. Mmm. Saw them live ten or twelve times, back when they were big. I always wanted to be a roadie." This sounds very odd coming out of her mouth -- she's dressed in a peasant blouse and flowered skirt and she's got her hair up in a ton of little twists. Very much the hippy.

"OH, it's very easy. We get a table and order food, and then while it's cooking you can wander around and pick something to paint. And then we paint while we eat. C'mon, let's get a table."

Jake nodded to himself, "Sounds like fun. Certainly satisfy my need for creativity." Noticing her attire, "And you definitely look like someone who couldn't live without any." He then added politely, yet honestly, "You look very nice by the way."

He gestured his hand outward, "After you."

She gave him a little grin. "Why thank you." She flicked her skirt a little so it would swirl as she turned around and led on, getting them a table for two near the window (she was a regular here, and the waitress not only greeted her by name but knew the table she liked.)

"I'm afraid I don't knwo anything about you, except that you work in the ER and have good taste in music." Her eyes sparkle. "Tell me a little something."

He sat himself down across from her and gave a single, good-hearted chuckle, "Not so much to tell. Born outside of New York, lived there till I was 10, moved to Florida, Massechusetts, Washington state, then back to White Plains where I stayed until I moved here almost two weeks ago. My parents still live there and so does my younger sister, Amy, with her husband, my best friend Steve and their little boy, Sammy."

"I'm afraid my life isn't all that exciting." His eyes crinkled with humor, "It's mostly just running around in the ER or spending time with family, although I don't really have that now since they're a state away." He shrugged.

"How about yourself? What's your life's story?" He smirked mirthfully.

"Still, that's the best kind of boring." She grinned. "It sounds like a good life. Me, I'm an only child, good couple of parents. I grew up on a commune in California, believe it or not. Hmm. I was married once, but we were better friends than lovers. I wanted to save him and didn't realize he didn't need saving."

There's no sadness in her tone at all. "It was fun while it lasted, and I don't regret a day. We're both happier now. I work with children up in pediatrics. I've got a degree in social work, and I plan day to day activities so they don't get bored."

"That sounds like fun. And I'm sure you're the best person for the job." Jake folded his arms on the table.

"I've never been married. Came close to being engaged once, but that was it. I'd like to get married someday, have kids. The whole shebang, you know. I see my sister with that and it just gets me thinking sometimes." Jake shrugged, "Ah well, I still have Dusty."

"Married yes. Kids, I don't know. I have enough kids." She laughs. "I used to tease Jamie and say that he was kid enough for me." She paused as the waitress comes over and takes drink orders. "Dusty? Cat, dog, other?"

Jake bursted into chuckles, realizing he said it without explaining. He blushed slightly from the gaffe. "Other. That's just what I call my nephew Sammy. You see, when he was a baby, he used to always get into the baby powder and get himself and everything else covered in it. Here, look."

Jake reached into his back pocket, took out his wallet, and removed a picture of a year-old Sammy with thick brown hair and eyes just as blue as Jake's innocently playing with a bottle of baby powder, with dust pluming everywhere. He held it out to her, being the proud uncle. Jake's eyes twinkled at the subject.

"Aw, now that's a doll if I ever saw one." She took the picture and examined it with a delighted smile. "What a joy. How old is he now, still a year or so?" She handed the picture back as the drinks arrived.

"I do have a cat, but only the one. I 'm somewhat afraid I'll turn into one of those old cat ladies."

"Oh, he's four now. Starting preschool this fall." Jake said, tucking the picture safely back in his wallet.

"That's funny. All this week, I've been toying with the idea of getting a cat, myself. Haven't quite decided yet.

The waitress came back with their drinks and asked if they were ready to order. Jake asked, "Julie?" After all, ladies first.

"Absolutely, I'll have my usual, the vegetarian wrap with extra sprouts, please! And I'll go wild and have fries instead of rice as the side, if you would." She beams up and waits for him to order. "Want to wander and look at the pottery?"

Jake looked at the waitress, "Make it two. Easy on the sprouts." He added with a smirk.

Then he turned back to Julie as the waitress set off, "From the sound of iut, you must only have french fries on special occasions. I'm truly honored, Julie."

Then his eyes started darting around all the pottery lined up and scattered about. "And sure--let's wander. My curiosity's piqued."

"Only when I'm bound and determined to be so cheerful it's scary." She grins broadly and hops up. "I know my way around the pottery. Do you want something fun to paint, or useful, or easy?" She starts gesturing around. "The little dishes are pretty easy to do, and always fun. I get a new vase constantly. Herman is always knocking it off the front table."

[info]er_doc_jake

July 17 2005, 02:45:50 UTC 6 years ago

Absently stroking his chin in thought, Jake took a quick gander around, "I was thinking about a vase myself. But not for myself. I have no use for one, but I could always give it to someone."

He turned back to the woman, whose laidback demeanor he'd always admireded in people, "And Herman? Is that your cat? In that case, I guess we'll both be painting vases, huh?"

"It's always lovely to have hand-made gifts, isn't it?" She approves, and gives him a little grin. "Planning ahead for secret santa at christmas time?"

She lifted a vase off the shelf herself. "Oh yes. Herman the Hermit, you see. He likes hiding in his cubby over top of the bookshelf and just surveying his kingdom and his human. Sometimes he deigns to allow his catnip mouse up there with him."

Jake chuckled, "Herman the Hermit! That's cute."

A shelf of vases caught his eye, so he went closer to see better, "The vase would be just for a friend." Hopefully still. He found a small, skinny one. It's sleek, stylish, simple. Perfect. He carefully plucked it off the shelf, "Found one. Guess we're ready."

"Thank you. He seems rather fond of me. Sadly, he doesn't sit still for the camera or I'd have a picture to show off." She picked up her own usual, one with two loopy handles on the sides, and carried it back with them. The waitress had already left paints and brushes.

"So why the ER? You don't seem like a speed junkie, at least."

Jake shrugged, "Guess I saw the staffing need to balance personalities. I come in handy before things become volitile between staffers. I've always been the intermediary with friends, so I guess I just got used to it and carried it into my professional life."

He plucked up a paint brush and pondered what color to use first--or even what design to paint. "Plus, there's always a need for ER people--especially those who aren't of the curmudgeon persuasion.
